The farm

A small valley
with a long memory.

Los Frailes lies between the Galera and Huéchar hills in Alhama de Almería. Its farmhouse, water cisterns and irrigation channels date back to at least the 19th century. The family bought the farm in 1951 and planted new grape arbours, stone fruit and, from the 1990s, citrus.

Rather than building greenhouses, as many farms nearby did, the family chose to keep traditional open-air crops and the landscape that goes with them. Organic farming was the way to do it.
